Some PlayStation 3 game servers will shut down in January 2019

Sony has emailed PlayStation owners with a notice impacting the PlayStation 3: some game servers will be shutting down in January 2019. The decision to shut down the servers only applies to a handful of games, none of which are likely to have a large number of players at this point. Other game servers will continue to operate for now.

Sony sent out the notices via email on Tuesday, November 13, informing users that they will no longer be able to access the online component for select games impacted by the shut down. According to the email, Sony will shut down the servers for the following games:

Warhawk
Twisted MetalPlayStation All-Stars: Battle RoyaleSound Shapes

This is a planned service shut down with an extended deadline scheduled for January 31, 2019 at midnight Pacific Time. Once that date and time arrives, PS3 owners with the aforementioned games will no longer be able to access online multiplayer, share progress with their community, or download community content.

The impact varies by game. Warhawk, for example, will no longer have online gameplay but will still allow for LAN local network play with friends. Offline split-screen campaign gameplay will still be supported by PlayStation All-Star: Battle Royale and Twisted Metal.

Finally, Sound Shapes users will have access to all of the content and will retain the ability to create new levels, but won't be able to use network features like sharing. Sony had originally planned to end online support for these games on October 25 of this year, but was able to extend the deadline for a couple months.
