SNES Classic release date and sale details

Following up on the immense success of the NES Classic Edition, Nintendo has announced the SNES Classic Edition. This announcement probably isn't going to shock too many people, considering that how many consumers were clamoring to get an NES Classic during its retail availability. With Nintendo now giving the same treatment to its 16-bit era console, we can already assume that the SNES Classic Edition will be just as successful as its predecessor.

Nintendo of America announced the classic console in a tweet just a few minutes ago. The SNES Classic Edition will come packed with 21 games, and the list features some of the most famous titles from that console generation. Have a look at the full list of titles below:

Contra III: The Alien Wars

Donkey Kong Country

EarthBound

Final Fantasy III

F-ZERO

Kirby Super Star

Kirby's Dream Course

The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past

Mega Man X

Secret of Mana

Star Fox

Star Fox 2

Street Fighter II Turbo: Hyper Fighting

Super Castlevania IV

Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts

Super Mario Kart

Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars

Super Mario World

Super Metroid

Super Punch-Out!!

Yoshi's Island

That list is packed with a bunch of Nintendo's greatest hits, from Super Mario RPG and Donkey Kong Country to The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. Those of you inspecting the list closely might find a curiosity lurking among the more famous titles: Star Fox 2. Yes, Nintendo has actually finished Star Fox 2 for this release, which was famously left incomplete as the company transitioned from the SNES to the N64.

With that in mind, it's possible that the SNES Classic proves to be even more successful than the NES Classic. Hopefully Nintendo has sorted out its supply chain for this release, as NES Classic Edition stock was painfully hard to come by for the duration of its retail run. To make matters worse, Nintendo pulled the plug on the NES Classic long before many consumers had a chance to actually buy one, so here's hoping that the launch of the SNES Classic Edition is different in every conceivable way.

The SNES Classic Edition launches in the US on September 29. Unlike the NES Classic Edition, Nintendo is actually including two wired controllers this time around, but as a result, you can expect to pay $79.99 for it – $20 more than the NES Classic Edition.
