Sigma's pocket-sized full-frame mirrorless camera arrives for preorder

In July, Sigma introduced 'fp,' a tiny mirrorless digital camera packing a 24.6MP full-frame CMOS sensor into a pocket-sized camera body. The model offers an impressive combination of sensor size and portability, targeting photography enthusiasts and professionals who need to get the best shot possible in situations where a large DSLR may not be suitable. The Sigma fp is now available to preorder.

The Sigma fp mirrorless camera is, the company claims, the lightest and smallest full-frame camera available on the market. The 'pocketable' design is the product's maintain appeal, opening the door for a new level of portability and use in compact shooting environments.

The 'fp' measures around 4.4in x 2.7in x 1.7in and weighs 13 ounces without a lens and other accessories. Sigma elected to use the L-mount on its new mirrorless model, opening the door for use with lenses from a number of manufacturers. In order to maintain the camera's tiny size, Sigma's design abandons the viewfinder, instead offering only the 3.2in rear LCD.

The camera body is constructed from die-cast aluminum and it is joined by a large heat sink that works with a heat dissipation coating to keep the camera from getting too warm. Sigma packed a splash- and dust-proof structure into the fp to help protect it from the environment.

Other features include built-in 1/4-inch threads for accessories like a carrying strap, an electronic shutter, a new color mode called 'Teal and Orange,' Cine and Still modes, support for capturing cinemagraphs and HDR images, plus focus peaking and face/eye detection for autofocus.

Starting today, interested consumers can preorder the Sigma fp for $1,900 USD (body only) from retailers like B&H Photo. The units are scheduled to start shipping on October 25.
