ShutterBOT transforms Android devices into a DSLR remote

Many have forsaken their digital cameras in favor of the camera on their smartphone, but the exception is largely the professional and dedicated hobbyists among us. Most DSLR cameras can be used with a remote, which often has to be picked up separately from the camera itself. To avoid that — or handle those times you forget to pack the remote with your gear — comes a new app called ShutterBOT available to Android users. With ShutterBOT, any Android smartphone or tablet can be turned into a DSLR remote.

The benefit to using a remote when taking photos is obvious: you avoid the shakiness that can result from hand-based motion, particularly in long-exposure photographs. The ShutterBOT app gives you that benefit without the need to carry around a dedicated remote, and it supports most DSLR cameras on the market.

According to the maker, support is in place for "all major DSLR cameras" from the well-known camera makers, including Canon, Sony, Nikon, Olympus, Fuji, Pentax, and Minolta. There's support for both 2-second delayed shutter and instant shutter, and for those willing to shell out for a feature, there's a voice trigger option available as an in-app purchase.

The app arrived in the Google Play Store last month, where it is available for free. It is compatible with any Android device running version 4.1 or higher, though the device itself will need to be IR-equipped in order to work properly. The app was just recently updated to work properly with the LG G3, Samsung devices running 4.4.3, and HTC devices running KitKat.
