Shine fitness tracking device app comes to Android

Shine, the quarter-sized activity tracker that attaches to your clothing, now has an app for Android. Until today, you could only sync the elegant little button to iOS devices. The device's manufacturer, Misfit Wearables, is set to make the announcement today (Monday.)

The Shine app for Android requires version 4.3 (Jelly Bean) or above, with Bluetooth 4.0 (Smart). The app lets you set and monitor fitness goals tracked by Shine. It shows you summaries of how you're meeting your activity goals in conjunction with days, weeks, and other standards. It tracks steps taken, calories burned, and sleeping patterns (light to deep.)

A circle of lights on the device itself gives you a quick, on-board visual indicator of how well you're doing with your goals. Shine is one of the smaller fitness trackers out there; it's designed to be inconspicuous. The all-metal construction is water-resistant to 50 meters, so even swimmers can use it (attachable via a watchband or necklace.)

The coin battery is replaceable and lasts four to six months, Misfit says. That way there are no cables involved — just the wireless sync. The Android app will be available for download at the Google Play Store.
