See the new YouTube VR app for Daydream

This morning Google gave a first glance at their newest VR app – YouTube VR for Daydream. This app will show off both spherical 360 videos as well as flat videos all in a virtual space. This release will build on Google's releases of new video and audio formats on YouTube for VR – both Spacial Audio and 360-degree video included. What we're able to see thus far is limited – but extremely encouraging and full of potential.

According to Google, their "early bets" on both 360-degree and 3D video means there's a big amount of content already prepared for YouTube VR. You'll be able to see "everything from classic 16x9 videos to 360-degree footage to cutting-edge VR experiences in full 3-D."

Below you'll see the extremely short demonstration shown at Google I/O onstage at the VR session on day 2 of 2016's event series.

If you'd like to see that Shark video used as a demo piece, you can do that now as well. It's not brand new, by any means – instead made earlier this year by Curiscope and uploaded as one of the many, many 360-spherical videos already part of Google's massive collection on YouTube.

"We're creating the YouTube VR app to provide an easier, more immersive way to find and experience virtual reality content on YouTube," said Kurt Wilms, Senior Product Manager of YouTube Virtual Reality.

"It also comes with all the YouTube features you already love, like voice search, discovery, and playlists, all personalized for you, so you can experience the world's largest collection of VR videos in a whole new way."

You can see another set of 360 videos we've just captured in Hawaii at the Angry Birds Movie press junket. There you'll find fabulous vistas and a set of rather angry actual, real life birds as well. Watch out for the chickens.
