Yesterday we talked a bit about the Samsung Z2 smartphone and how it was tipped to launch this month. That tip has proven accurate with Samsung officially launching the Tizen-powered Z2 in India today. Samsung says that the Z2 is its first 4G enabled Tizen-powered smartphone aimed at the user transitioning from a feature phone to their first smartphone.

The Z2 has features specifically tailored to the Indian market with the "Make for India" features including Ultra Data Saving mode, S bike mode, and My Money Transfer. The smartphone includes an invitation to the Jio Preview offer that gives free voice and data service in the trial period. The smartphone also gets access to premium Jio apps like My Jio, Jio on Demand, and Jio Beats.

Specifications include a 1.5GHz quad-core processor paired with 1GB of RAM and 8GB of internal storage. The internal storage can be expanded up to 128GB with a microSD card slot. Samsung also integrates dual SIM card support. Power comes from a 1500mAh internal battery.

The display is a 4-inch WVGA unit and the camera on the rear of the smartphone is a 5MP unit with LED flash and VGA front camera. Samsung says that the Ultra Data Saving mode can reduce data usage by up to 40% by blocking background applications that aren't needed and using compression technology. The My Money transfer app allows the user to manage transactions and generate mini bank statements. The Samsung Z2 is priced at INR 4590 (about $68) and will be available to purchase on August 29 in three different colors. Available colors include gold, black, and wine red.

Mr. Manu Sharma, Vice President, Mobile Business, Samsung India Electronics, said, "Samsung Z2 makes 4G accessible and relevant to the unique needs of feature phone users and first time smartphone buyers. It brings consumers a fast and affordable mobile internet experience that will democratize 4G usage in the country."
