Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3 release official: price, new features

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3 was revealed today with price and release date details aplenty. This new device works with some significant upgrades over its immediate predecessor, starting with a significantly larger and more usable external display. Where the Galaxy Z Flip 5G had a 1.1-inch display, the new Galaxy Z Flip 3 has a 1.9-inch display.

What's new?

Both devices have the same size foldable display panel inside 9 6.7-inches measured diagonally.* Both the Flip 2 and 3 weigh the same at approximately 183g. Both devices have the ability to work with one eSIM and one Nano SIM, and both have the same dual-battery (with 3,300mAh capacity).

Both the old and the new Flip devices have a fingerprint sensor on their side for wake up and unlock. Both machines have effectively the same set of cameras on their front (inside) at 10MP with F/2.4 aperture. The external cameras are also effectively identical to their predecessors, though they come packed in a very different looking array. The Galaxy Z Flip 3 also works with Super Clear Glass with Corning Gorilla Glass with DX where the old machine does not, for what it's worth.

*Differences start to appear in the quality of the displays. The foldable display is the same size as its predecessor, is still called FHD+ Dynamic AMOLED, with Infinity Flex Display branding, but it's quoted as having 2640 x 1080 pixels, while its predecessor had 2636 x 1080 – you'll get four more pixels!

The external display is far more significantly different than what's delivered with the Flip 2. The Z Flip 2 had a 1.1-inch Super AMOLED display with 300 x 112 pixels (303ppi). The new Galaxy Z Flip 3 has a 1.9-inch Super AMOLED display with 512 x 260 pixels (also 303ppi). This new display is far more usable than what came before – especially when we're talking about using it for a live viewfinder for the back-facing cameras.

The new Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3 works with a new processor – the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888, where the previous Flip worked with the Snapdragon 865. The old device was available with 8GB RAM and 256GB internal storage with UFS3.0. The new device has UFS3.1 storage with two options: 128GB or 256GB. Both versions have 8GB RAM.

The Galaxy Z Flip 3 has a stereo speaker system while the previous release had just the mono speaker system. Both devices had Dolby Atmos sound system branding.

The elder Z Flip measured in at 73.6 x 167.3 x 7.2mm unfolded. The folded dimensions were 73.6 x 87.4 x 17.3mm-15.4mm (thickest to thinnest point). The unfolded dimensions of the Galaxy Z Flip 3 are 72.2 x 166 x 6.9mm (just a tiny bit smaller by each metric). The folded dimensions of the Galaxy Z Flip 3 are 72.2 x 86.4 x 17.1mm-15.9mm. That's smaller by all metrics save the thinnest point, which is 0.5mm thicker on the new device.

The new Galaxy Z Flip 3 has IPX8 water resistance where the previous device had none. The new device has Corning Gorilla Glass Victus on all of its external surfaces (save the camera lenses and the foldable display panel). The entire device has what Samsung calls Armor Aluminum to deliver Samsung's "strongest aluminum frame yet."
