Samsung Focus and Omnia 7 Support USB Tethering

Here's an interesting development, part of a story that many would have believed closed. If you've been keeping up with Windows Phone 7, and how Microsoft admitted that tethering won't be supported by the mobile platform right off the bat, then the above title should seem pretty confusing. Or exciting. If you managed to get your hands on a Samsung Focus (for AT&T, here in the States), or the Omnia 7 (internationally), and you've been aching to use your device as a 3G modem, you can actually do it.

Despite what Microsoft may have said, it looks like the tethering feature hasn't been completely pulled from Samsung manufactured devices. So far, this hasn't been found to work on any other Windows Phone 7 handset. But, if you want to give it a shot, you need to follow some pretty simple steps.

The first thing you need to do, is access the phone's dialer, and then punch in ##634##, which will launch the handset's diagnostics menu. When you're there, you'll enter *#7284# in the next menu you see. Find your way into the "Modem, Tethered Call" area, follow the on-screen instructions, and then you'll find the USB tethering option. If you can make it there, you can access the feature.

Interestingly enough, there have been reports that some people have not been able to make it work, but a surprising amount of people have managed to get it functioning. If you have the device, and want to give it a shot, let us know in the comments how it goes for you.
