Rovio buys Futuremark games team

Rovio isn't content to sit idle and bask in the success of Angry Birds Space, announcing today that it is buying the gaming division of benchmarking specialists Futuremark. The entertainment arm is responsible for Unstoppable Gorg on the iPad as well as desktop, iOS title Hungribles, and Shattered Horizon for PC.

As for Futuremark, the company will now focus on its benchmarking systems. The company "will now focus on supporting gamers and industry with 3DMark" it said in a statement about the acquisition today, with plans for a more advanced version later in 2012 that will allow for cross-platform testing of game abilities. The updated app "will allow unified gaming performance comparison across operating systems and form factors for the first time" Futuremark says.

It's all change in the mobile gaming world of late. Last week, Zynga announced it was purchasing OMGPOP, creator of the hit Draw Something game on Android and iOS, while Rovio itself confirmed yesterday that it had seen a huge 10m downloads of Angry Birds Space on iOS, Android, Mac and PC in the title's first three days of availability.

Rovio is yet to confirm what, exactly, it will be doing with the Futuremark game engineers, and pricing for the deal has not been announced.
