Rocket scientist explains McLaren 720S science of speed

It takes a lot of effort on the part of an automotive manufacturer to create a sports car. So many different things go into the car other than style and a big, powerful motor. McLaren is a company that makes some of the fastest performance cars on the planet and its 720S is among those speed demons.

McLaren engineers its cars in what it calls a "methodical pursuit of speed." If you ever wondered about the science behind all that speed that the cars produce, you will like this video that McLaren has posed. In the video, a rocket scientist called Ryan W. Conversano Ph. D talks about some of the science behind the speed of the car.

The video was shot at the McLaren Thought Leadership Centre in the UK. The scientist talks about all sorts of formulas including one for acceleration being force divided by mass. McLaren tends to make cars that are very beautiful from some angles and very strange from others (I'm looking at you hideous 720S headlights). The scientist says that sometimes odd design has to do with acceleration and aerodynamics.

The lack of sharp angles and intake vents found on many sports cars help give the 720S its slippery shape. The entire design is meant to make airflow around the car. You can watch the full video below.

The McLaren 720S uses a 4.0L twin-turbo V8 engine that can push the beast to 62mph in 2.7 seconds. The base price for the 720S is $284,745 and the options can increase that price to the tune of tens of thousands of dollars. It's an oddly beautiful car and the seven-minute video is worth a watch.
