Rdio adds 20 new countries to its growing list of markets

On the same day that Spotify announced ad-supported mobile device streaming, the expansion into 20 new markets, and the addition of Led Zeppelin to its growing catalog, rival Rdio has made an announcement of its own. It too is expanding into 20 new markets. Some of Radio's new markets overlap with Spotify's.

TechCrunch surmises that the Rdio announcement today has designed to meet today's Spotify announcement head-on. Rdio's new markets are Argentina, Bolivia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Hungary, Israel, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Monaco, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, South Africa, Uruguay and Venezuela.

Rdio's 20 new markets keep it one step ahead of its rival in terms of sheer number of markets. As far as userbase goes — the gold-standard "monthly active user" figure — Rdio made no announcement today pertaining to it. We do know that Spotify boasts 24 million, according to its own announcement.

All we know for certain about Rdio's userbase is that its growth outside the US is accelerating rapidly. At the end of 2012, the figure had grown by 30 percent. By the end of 2013, that growth will be 57%.

The Rdio music library currently has about 20 million songs and counting.
