President Obama is on our side when it comes to net neutrality

Speaking at the US Africa Leaders Summit, President Obama had some interesting remarks regarding net neutrality. The ongoing discussion has clearly worked its way into the White House, and the President's comments could indicate there is internal discourse on the matter.

Tom Wheeler, FCC Chairman and man leading us dead into the net neutrality war, isn't opposed to a split-level offering from ISPs. He may even find it the best method, but the President isn't buying. "You don't want to start getting a differentiation in how accessible the Internet is to different users", said President Obama.

It should noted that Wheeler's ideology revolves around an idea that ISPs like Verizon or Comcast could create a faster tier without degrading the current offerings we enjoy now. Think of it as Gigabit Internet as a premium offering, except price isn't the only determining factor. That uber-fast Internet would have special content, too.

The President's comments disrupt his silent observation of the ongoing debate, and perhaps come at the right time. The FCC website set-up to absorb public comment on net neutrality was crashed several times, and many of htose comments are boldly against a tiered service. Obama may feel just like we do. "Leave it open so the next Google and the next Facebook can succeed", he said.
