Porsche Tri-Wing S-91x Pegasus is a Star Wars ship you won't see in the film

The Star Wars franchise is home to a number of vehicles, most of which will probably never become reality. But with cars becoming smarter and gaining wings, some manufacturers might want to give that idea a spin, even if only on a conceptual level. That is exactly what Porsche did with Lucasfilm's blessing, designing a new Tri-Wing S-91x Pegasus that you will sadly not see in any official film or media.

The starfighter is exactly what it sounds like. It's what happens when give an iconic manufacturer license to create a new product from an iconic franchise. Make no mistake, it's a vehicle that won't look out of place in the Star Wars universe but Porsche naturally had to put in some elements that would let its fans know the idea didn't come from an alien galaxy far, far away.

The Tri-Wing S-91x Pegasus is outfitted with parts inspired by Porsche's flagships, the 911 and the Taycan, which may make less sense on starships. You have, for example, four-point daytime running lights and brake lights iconic of Porsche cars but may simply be decorative on a utilitarian military vehicle. The low seating position and the redesigned instrumentation aligned with the driver's axis was inspired by the 918 Spyder sports car instead of, say, a fighter jet.

Admittedly, the Porsche Tri-Wing S-91x Pegasus is definitely a work of art and sadly it will remain just that. This wasn't a tie-in with the carmaker to design a vehicle that would be used in any of the Star Wars media. Other than a 5-foot model that will be showcased at a premiere in Los Angeles next week, the starfighter will remain as a virtual 3D object.

It is, of course, just the latest in a long line of press releases and events that are building up the hype towards the last and final "mainline" Star Wars film. Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker premiere's on December 20 with the red carpet event happening on the 16th.
