Pokemon GO gen 2 update: More than 80 new Pokemon incoming

After an extended wait, Pokemon GO will finally receive most of the Pokemon from generation 2. Pokemon veterans will remember that generation 2 comprises Pokemon Gold and Silver, which added 100 Pokemon to the existing 150. Since we've already had some generation 2 monsters added to Pokemon GO, Niantic says that more than 80 new Pokemon will be added in this update, likely leaving out the legendaries to be discovered at a later date.

Generation 2 counts many fan favorite Pokemon among its ranks. The three starter Pokemon from Gold and Silver – Chikorita, Cyndaquil, and Totodile – are perhaps the most recognizable aside from the starters from Red, Blue, and Yellow, with others like Ampharos, Scizor, and Umbreon featuring as well. They'll begin appearing in the real world later this week, but at the moment that's as specific as Niantic is willing to get.

Make no mistake, this is an absolutely massive update, and new Pokemon aren't the only thing coming with it. Niantic says that new evolutions are coming as well, giving some Pokemon from the Kanto region (generation 1) evolutions that they didn't have before. We'll see new evolutions for Pokemon like Porygon, Onix, Scyther, and Golbat added to the game with this new update.

Some Pokemon evolve through the use of evolution items, and there were a bunch added in Gold and Silver. Niantic says those will also be coming to the Pokemon GO, and you'll be able to find them at PokeStops. Expect to find items like the King's Rock, Dragon Scale, Metal Coat, and Sun Stone when you visit PokeStops, though Niantic hasn't revealed how we'll use these to evolve our Pokemon just yet.

On top of that, we're getting two new berries to use in game. When you're in the midst of an encounter, you can use a Nanab berry to make the wild Pokemon slower and easier to catch, or you can a Pinap berry, which will award you with double candy if your next catch attempt is successful.

Finally, we can look forward to new wardrobe items and a new carousel that allows players to select berries and Pokeballs from the encounter screen, removing the need to open your bag while you're in the heat of battle. It sounds like an absolutely massive update is on the way for Pokemon GO, and these changes will begin rolling out later in the week. We'll keep an ear to the ground for when, exactly, this update launches, so keep it here at SlashGear for more.
