POGs return as an augmented reality mobile game

POGs, the 90s game that enjoyed massive popularity, will return in the form of a mobile augmented reality game. The game comes from Compton Technology, which is seeking funding for its product on Indiegogo. The game will be free to play and is officially licensed by the World POG Federation.

As with the physical game, the POG AR app will let two players battle each other using virtual slammers and POGs. Players will get the chance to collect sets of POGs by scanning real items, according to the company, and there will also be content to unlock. Despite being an AR game, players can win real prizes, as well as rare POGs.

As well, Compton Technology's app will enable players to compete in regular tournaments, which reward the winners with slammer upgrades, new items, and other unspecified things. The slammers individually feature their own upgrades and abilities, and the game supports different throwing techniques.

The AR game promises to cover the two big elements of appeal the original game offered: the ability to compete and collect. Collecting is a key part of winning games, as certain slammers can devastate a stack. How well players will be able to control the AR throws is unknown, though, and will no doubt have a big effect on the game's competitiveness.

The company is offering perks for players who support the game via Indiegogo, including giving them a limited edition physical slammer that, when scanned, unlocks in-game "elite" content. As well, those backers will get a custom POG character, a bunch of in-game currency, access to the beta, and other things.
