PlayStation VR event confirmed for March 15

Now that the final consumer editions of both the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive virtual reality headsets have been revealed with set pre-order dates, Sony needs to get into gear with regard to specifics about its upcoming PlayStation VR hardware. The gaming giant seems to know this, as they've just announced a special media event to take place on March 15th, alongside the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco.

Invites have been sent out to the press, and while they don't contain any big revelations, they do state that the PlayStation VR headset will be available for hands-on tests with some demos. Sony has only said that PlayStation VR would see a release in the "first half of 2016," but it seems very likely that this event will be about a solid release date and final price.

The Oculus Rift and HTC Vive have been announced with some fairly steep prices; $599 and $799, respectively. Plus they need to be paired with some powerful PCs, spec-wise. PlayStation VR will of course work with the PS4, but there's a chance Sony can undercut its biggest rivals on sticker price.

Another motivation Sony might have is to put to rest the recent claim from GameStop's CEO that the PlayStation VR wouldn't be released until sometime this fall. Sony already refuted that claim, but it's still time they reveal something concrete for consumers.
