PlayStation trophies you earn are now worth some cash

For more than a decade now, we've had achievements tied to our games in one way or another. On PlayStation, achievements take the form of trophies, and up until today, there wasn't much reason to chase those aside from your own personal sense of accomplishment. Sony is making trophy hunting a lot more worthwhile today by assigning an actual monetary value to the ones you earn.

As spotted by Kotaku, Sony has launched a new program that awards you points for every trophy you unlock through Sony Rewards. Once you hit 1,000 Rewards points, you're able to exchange them for a $10 gift certificate. In other words, you can now earn money by unlocking trophies, but you're going to have to be pretty dedicated before it begins paying off.

Sony says that 10 Platinum trophies are worth 1,000 points, meaning that each Platinum trophy you unlock is worth 100 points on its own. Those who already game on PlayStation 4 will know that unlocking a Platinum trophy isn't usually an easy task, as you only get one when you're earned every other trophy in the game. With this program, you'll need to do that for 10 different games before you get a payout.

According to this page on the Sony Rewards website, we learn that 100 silver trophies are worth 100 points – one point each – while gold trophies are worth 10 points each. Therefore, you might as well chase those platinum trophies, since you'll need to earn gold and silver ones anyway.

To begin earning money for your trophies, you only need to sign up for Sony Rewards and link your PSN account. Unfortunately, this isn't some kind of retroactive deal where the trophies you've already earned count toward credit, so only trophies you earn after you link your PSN and Sony Rewards accounts will count. Still, this is an interesting way to reward players for dedicating more time to the games they play.
