PlayStation 4 issues "within expected range" for a new product

There's at least one "Blue Light of Death" out there this month with the release of the PlayStation 4, and today Sony appears to be addressing it for the second time in a week. This issue is apparently not as centralized on one particular issue as it seems – instead Sony suggests that there are "several issues" and that they believe there "isn't a singular problem" which they'd end up needing to be particularly concerned with.

Instead, Sony says, the number of "affected" PlayStation 4 units out there today is within the expected amount to appear with the launch of any new product, even one so massive as the PlayStation 4. Lending a word to Engadget this morning, an SCEA (Sony Computer Entertainment America) representative let it be known that they've got things under control, so to speak.

"There have been several issues reported, which leads us to believe there isn't a singular problem that could impact a broader percentage of PS4 units. We also understand that some units were reportedly damaged during shipping. The number of affected PS4 systems is less than 1%, which represents a very small percentage of total units shipped to date and is within the expected range for a new product introduction.

We understand the frustration of consumers that have had a problem and are working with them and our retail partners to help troubleshoot issues and ensure affected units are exchanged." – Sony Computer Entertainment America Representative

This statement comes after an initial statement which suggested that the Blue Light issue affected a slightly smaller percentage of users. You'll be forgiven for having a slightly case of deja-vu here.

"A handful of people have reported issues with their PlayStation 4 systems. This is within our expectations for a new product introduction, and the vast majority of PS4 feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. We are closely monitoring for additional reports, but we think these are isolated incidents and are on track for a great launch.

There have been several problems reported, which leads us to believe there isn't a singular problem that could impact a broader percentage of systems. The number of affected systems represents less than .4% of shipped units to date, which is within our expectations for a new product introduction." – Sony Computer Entertainment America Representative

If the percentage of "affected" devices is indeed 1%, even just that seemingly tiny percentage point, that number appears a whole lot larger when you consider the idea that Sony sold 1 million PlayStation 4 units on day one. If 1 million PS4 units are out there, 1% of them, 10,000 of them, are potentially busted. Here's rooting for Sony to get this all fixed up real quick!
