PlayStation 4 5.0 Beta System Update: How to get this game-changer

The most mega-large of updates to the base system UI and features of the PlayStation 4 (PS4) is available to the public now. While not every member of the public will be given access, the front door was effectively thrown open by Sony this week. All that lies between you and the next generation in PlayStation 4 software is a Sony guard at the door that checks to see if you're on the waiting list – so to speak.

This rather large update goes by the version number 5.0 – that should indicate well enough how major it is. Smaller versions come with extra numbers at the end. With this update, Sony means serious business. With this version of Sony's PS4 system software, users will "get an advance look at some of the improvements and new features coming to PS4."

Considering what we've seen before with Beta software – even relatively innocuous updates like 4.5 – this 5.0 update is sure to tickle our imagination. Version 4.5 brought about external HDD support, Quick Menu refresh, custom wallpapers and other oddities. We'll find out soon what 5.0 contains – until then, it's sign-up time.

Users that wish to get in on this update will need to start by signing up for the Beta. This Beta's start-date will be "in early August" according to Sony's PlayStation PR. Users will have a few requirements to fill before jumping in on the update – especially considering they'll be part of the play-test crew.

First – users will need to have access to a Master Account on their PlayStation 4. Second – users will need to be PlayStation Now subscribers. Third – users will need to be 18 years of age or older.

Items Required on Registration for PS4 5.0 Beta:

1. Your PSN ID: "Please make sure you have a valid e-mail address on your PSN account to receive a voucher."

2. Are you a PlayStation Now subscriber? Yes, currently, or no, currently.

3. Would you like to receive news and information from Sony Computer Entertainment America regarding future Beta programs? Yes or no.

Users that fill out the form will be notified in the near future if they've been selected. If they are selected, a "Voucher Code" will be emailed by Sony. If the user is not selected, Sony "will not contact you regarding this Beta Trial."
