Pixel 2 XL Android 8.1 slows down screen wake up

The year is almost over and both Google and Pixel phone owners probably want to quickly leave the year and turn over a new page. Sadly, it seems that the Pixel 2 XL's streak is far from over just yet. While most of the earlier complaints and issues with the larger Google smartphone have mostly been ironed out by software updates, at least one more has come up thanks to those same updates, like this slow down of the Pixel 2 XL screen wake up time for those on Android 8.1.

The issue was initially misdiagnosed as affecting the fingerprint scanner. Users found that, after trying to unlock the Pixel 2 XL with the fingerprint scanner, it wold take a few seconds before the phone actually became usable. The problem, however, was actually affecting the screen instead.

The fingerprint sensor was working fine, since the vibration feedback immediately kicked on touch. But despite that, the screen would take seconds before actually turning on. This theory was supported by actually trying to turn the screen on first by pressing the power button.

Google seems to already be aware of the complaints and is gathering bug reports and information privately. It has, so far, not confirmed whether it is really something that affects more than just a few units. Whether it does or doesn't, however, is no longer Pixel users' main gripe anymore.

This is hardly the first problem to plague the Pixel 2 XL in particular and the second gen Pixel phones in general. People are starting to call out Google over its poor quality control, both in software as well as the hardware itself. It definitely isn't a good quarter for Google devices.

Some, however, also point out that Google isn't alone in the shoddy rollout of software updates. Even Apple has recently come under fire for recent iOS updates that, among other things, left some smart locks open to hacking. That said, being told you're no better than your fiercest rival isn't a exactly glowing recommendation either.
