Pic3D sheets turn your 2D smartphones and displays into 3D screens

I like 3D content. If I have the choice of a movie in 2D or a flick in 3D, I will take the 3D offering. My son also has a 3DS and I think the 3D makes the little portable much cooler than it would be if it were only 2D. One day I will move up to a 3D TV for my house, but I am waiting until we can watch 3D content with no glasses from all angles that a normal TV supports before I buy. In the interim a company from Japan called Global Wave has an interesting new film that sticks to your computer screen, tablet, or smartphone and makes the display 3D.

The film is called Pic3D and it needs no glasses for the user to view the 3D content. The film is based on the lenticular lens system and there will be films offered in multiple sizes to fit different devices. The film will come in sizes for 12.1-inch, 15.6-inch, 21.5-inch, and 23-inch displays. There will also be sheets that are cut to fit the iPad 2, iPhone, and iPod touch. The only catch is that it won't just make all of you content look 3D.

The company says that it works with video files in a side-by-side format. You would plug in your URL into some sort of social browser in two places and the one video would be overlaid for 3D effects using the screen film. The company is looking at a launch in early August. They say it would work on YouTube. I wonder if you would have to rent a movie twice via YouTube to be able to make it 3D. Prices will start at $25 for the iPhone and run up to $186 for the 23-inch LCD sheet.
