Photoshop Mix for iPad hooks cloud processing to tablet

Adobe has released Photoshop Mix for iPad, harnessing the native graphics processing power of Apple's tablets as well as the remote crunching capabilities of the cloud, for keen image editors. Integrated with Adobe Creative Cloud, it can open standard PSD Photoshop files shared from the desktop. Meanwhile, Lightroom mobile for iPhone is being released too, joining the existing iPad version.

Photoshop Mix carries over some of the more popular features from the software to the iPad. Images can be loaded from Creative Cloud, Lightroom mobile, or from the camera roll and Facebook, and edited with a number of preconfigured – though tweakable – "looks" and filters.

Cut-outs can be applied, snipping out key parts of the frame, while multiple images can be combined into a single still.

Since the app would be far less useful if it stood in isolation, Adobe has linked it straight into the sharing system for the regular desktop Photoshop. Full PSD files can be opened, as well as individual layers from such files, and then once tweaked they can be exported back as layered and masked compositions.

As for the cloud services, that includes advanced processing like Upright, Content Aware Fill, and Camera Shake Reduction, that are manipulated server-side and then passed back to the tablet.

Lightroom for iPhone borrows the same features as the iPad version, but ported over to Apple's smartphone. Meanwhile, there's now synchronization between Adobe Voice – the company's storytelling tool – and Lightroom photo collections.

Adobe Photoshop Mix and the other apps are all available from today, in English, German, French, and Japanese variations, from Apple's App Store.
