Phonebloks to run modified Android L

The modular smartphone Phonebloks was the recent subject of a keynote during which some new details were dropped, as well as information on the progress that has been made thus far. Amongst what was revealed is that the modular handset will be running a modified version of Android L.

Says Giulio Minotti in an update on the Phonebloks blog, the smartphone's modified version of Android L has been developed in work with Linaro, and will let most of the phone's modules be hot swappable, meaning you can toggle between them without powering off the handset.

The display and the CPU are the only module exceptions, for obvious reasons. The various modules will be available to users via an online store that Phonebloks says will be akin to the Google Play Store. No additional details on this were provided.

This coming December will have the first complete prototype demonstrated at the second developers conference for the phone. It is teased that there will be modules available for the phone that bring "never seen before" features. More details are promised in the coming months leading up to the launch early next year.
