Penny Arcade turns to Kickstarter to go ad-free

Ever since Tim Schafer found success in getting his upcoming adventure game funded through Kickstarter, we've seen an influx of developers – both big and small – flock to the service with the same aspirations. Today, however, there's a new Kickstarter campaign that isn't quite like anything we've seen before: Penny Arcade is using the crowd-funding site in an attempt to go ad-free for a year. It's going to take a lot of money too, so have your wallet at the ready.Penny Arcade creators Mike Krahulik and Jerry Holkins have set the amount they need to raise at $250,000, but if they manage to raise that much, only the leaderboard ad on the front page of the site will be going away. If the pair manages to raise $525,000, all of the ads on the front page disappear, and it isn't until reaching $999,999 in total pledges that the entire site goes ad-free.

So, if readers want an entirely ad-free experience while visiting Penny Arcade, they'll collectively have to shell out $1 million. That's a pretty lofty goal, but then again, Penny Arcade has a lot of dedicated fans, so reaching $1 million in total pledges certainly isn't outside the realm of possibility. At the time of this writing, Penny Arcade's Kickstarter campaign sits at $75,929 (and rising extremely fast) with 36 days left to go. It looks like Penny Arcade might just be going ad-free before long.
