Paramount and DreamWorks drop Blu-ray support

Lately Blu-ray has seemed as though it might be taking a little bit of a lead in the format wars. A new development looks to put big titles like Transformers and Shrek the Third exclusively on HD DVD.

Paramount and DreamWorks have always backed both high-def formats in the past, however, they have now decided to only back HD DVD. Why the change of heart? According to Bady Grey, CEO and Chairman of Paramount Pictures says that "I believe HD DVD is not only the affordable high quality choice for consumers, but also the smart choice for Paramount."

DreamWorks CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg also chimed in stating that "the combination of this year's low- priced HD DVD players and the commitment to release a significant number of hit titles in the fall makes HD DVD the best way to view movies at home." While this certainly won't be the end of Blu-ray, we can be sure that Transformers is going to be a big seller when it hits DVD and HD DVD, that'll be a nice feather in the cap of the HD DVD camp.
