OWC Envoy Pro EX claims to be the 'fastest USB-C SSD ever built'

Today OWC revealed its latest external SSD, the Envoy Pro EX. The Envoy Pro EX works with both PCs and Macs and promises pretty ridiculous transfer speeds for an external drive, with OWC saying they can go as high as 980MB/s. It's available in a number of sizes as well, though depending on what you're after, the price you pay has the potential to get expensive quickly.

Being an external drive, the Envoy Pro EX is meant to be taken on the go, and OWC promises today that its anodized aluminum shell gives it a certain degree of ruggedness. That includes an IP67 rating, which means that the drive is dust tight and can handle being submerged in up to one meter of water for as long as to 30 minutes. We personally wouldn't be willing to drop it in a bathtub full of water to test those claims, but if gets splashed in a spill or rained on, it'll probably be okay.

The full name of this drive is the Envoy Pro EX with USB-C, which means that it supports Thunderbolt 3 as well. OWC says that the Envoy Pro EX is the "the fastest USB-C SSD ever built," which is definitely a big claim. Have a look at the specifications provided by OWC below:

• Transfer speeds up to 980MB/s

• Capacity up to 2TB

• IP67 Rated (dust tight + water resistant for up to 30 minutes in 1 meter of water)

• NVMe M.2 SSD

• Compatible with both Mac & PC, plus direct-connect to devices like the latest USB-C cameras from Blackmagic Design

• Bus-powered

• Quiet fanless operation

• Ultra-portable

• Mac or PC

• Thunderbolt 3 compatible

The Envoy Pro EX is available beginning today in five different configurations. You can buy the enclosure alone without an SSD for $89.00, but most people will probably want to get an SSD pre-installed. Pricing for pre-installed SSDs comes in at $129.99 for 250GB, $179.99 for 500GB, $249.99 for 1TB, and $429.99 for 2TB. The Envoy Pro EX is available today from OWC's website.
