OPPO R17 Pro seizes the night in Europe, available next week

OPPO may have wowed consumers with its stunning yet somewhat eccentric Find X and its elevating camera, but in terms of more conventional smartphone designs, its R series is still its main brand. Especially when talking about photography prowess. And that is exactly what the Chinese company is bringing to Europe in the form of the OPPO R17 Pro, designed to seize the night with its triple cameras and last throughout the day with its bi-cell "dual" batteries.

The OPPO R17 Pro definitely has some rather interesting cameras on its back. Three, in fact. The main camera takes a page from Samsung's book by giving the 12 megapixel IMX362 sensor dual apertures of f/1.5 and f/2.4 that automatically switches between the two depending on lighting conditions. This feature, along with OPPO's AI Ultra-clear Engine, is what delivers the company's promise of an Ultra Night Mode.

But while other triple camera setups would provide different angles and zoom levels, the OPPO R17 Pro has an odd mix. The second camera simply assists the primary one with a 24 megapixel. f/2.6 sensor. The third, however, is not something you can use directly but is, instead, a TOF (time of flight) 3D camera for use in 3D photography and augmented reality. OPPO is proud to be the first to have both 3D structured light and TOF technology in the consumer market.

The OPPO R17 Pro has one other unique feature that sets it apart from others, even from its own siblings. It contains not one but two batteries, each 1,850 mAh in capacity. The total number is still the same large 3,700 mAh but OPPO explains that charging two smaller batteries at the same time is faster than charging one large pack. With is SuperVOOC technology, the smartphone can reach 40% charge in just 10 minutes because of that.

OPPO is also particularly proud of its new design in the R17 Pro. Gone are the days of plain solid colors as manufacturers seem to jump on the gradient trend. OPPO calls its new design "Radiant Mist", using a variety of materials and processes to create an effect similar to light passing through fog. Colorful light, that is. With a "waterdrop" notch, that theme almost fits perfectly.

In other aspects, the disappoint a bit if you simply look at its processor. That said, the Snapdragon 710 is Qualcomm's highest mid-range offering so far and the first in its new 700 series. There's plenty of RAM to spare even, 6 or 8 GB, and 128 GB of thankfully still expandable storage. The large 6.4-inch AMOLED screen will probably satisfy with its 2340x1080 Full HD+ resolution. The OPPO R17 Pro, or RX17 Pro, will go on sale in Europe starting November 16 for a price of 599 EUR, roughly $686 should it ever come to the US.
