OnePlus 5T vs 5: specs, pricing, release dates

This morning we saw the OnePlus 5T for the first time, and now we’re comparing the device to its nearest predecessor. The OnePlus 5T is meant to be a half-step between this past generation and the next, with a T to signify the change. As OnePlus suggested onstage today, the letter “T” is in place because Apple uses an “S” for their half-step phones every other year.

Specs

The biggest difference between the OnePlus 5T and the OnePlus 5 exist right up front. The display is bigger – not sharper, but certainly longer. The display takes up a larger portion of the front of the machine, while the machine is only ever-so-slightly larger than its predecessor. The newer device is 1080p, but not HD – HD+. This just means there’s more pixels along the other access, 1080 x 2160 instead of 1080 x 1920.

This new device continues to feature a headphone jack. OnePlus is using this opportunity – the one opened up by Apple – to keep a headphone jack on their phone instead of removing it. And to make sure they mention this, emphasizing this as a feature their phone holds over their competition.

The difference around back of these devices is in one of two cameras. A 2x camera array remains, but one of these cameras keeps its original specs. The primary camera is the same, while the second switches from an f/2.6 aperture to f/1.7. The image sensor for that secondary camera is newer now too, with a MX 376K instead of IMX 350.

The processor on the OnePlus 5T is still a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835, but it’s an ever-so-slightly different version. This version has a 2.45GHz quad-core CPU, while the 5’s 835 was 1.9GHz octa-core. Both work with 6GB of RAM, and both almost certainly have nearly identical performance – but we’ll see when we get the 5T in the lab for a full review.

Pricing and Release

The OnePlus 5 was originally offered for $479 at its least expensive – the smaller amount of storage inside. The larger OnePlus 5 (larger internal storage) cost $539. At the time this article is set to be published, these prices remain, but OnePlus lists both devices as out of stock.

The OnePlus 5T is set to be available for $499 in its 64GB internal storage space iteration. The larger version (128GB) will cost $559 USD. That means a $20 increase in price from its predecessor. This device will be available on November 21st, 2017 in the United States, Europe, and India.
