Android P update just announced for OnePlus 3 and 3T

The OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T were announced to get an Android P update this week, officially. That means that the phone that was released in the first half of 2016 is now getting an update to the newest version of Android in August of 2018. What is this, some sort of company which updates its smart devices like it should? It's absolute madness!

When it first became important to consumers that their personal devices be updated to the newest version of their devices' operating system, not all companies were onboard. Apple seemed to be onboard – they still guarantee 3 years of updates to all iPhones and iPads after they're first released. But it's been a while since we've heard any such promise from an Android-centric business.

We're just outside a 2-year span for the OnePlus 3 from first release, just barely. The OnePlus 3T is essentially the same as its predecessor, so it's not a major shock to find both devices with the same guarantee for an update. But for a company that's not always considered amongst the biggest names in smartphone manufacturing, releasing Android P for a 2+ year old smartphone is indeed a big deal.

The only bad news here is that it may be a matter of months before the OnePlus 3/3T get their updates. According to Gary, OxygenOS Operations for OnePlus, "The Android P update will be available on the OnePlus 6, OnePlus 5/T and OnePlus 3/3T, in this order. We will keep you all updated in the coming months."

We'll keep you updated on when the update will actually come down for each of the OnePlus smartphone models listed just above. It'll probably be a matter of weeks for the OnePlus 6 – or within the next month, cross your fingers. Then the OnePlus 5 and OnePlus 5T thereafter, and finally the OnePlus 3 and 3T. Newest to eldest.
