Oculus used to demo Lexus RC F in virtual reality

Welcome to your daily dose of virtual reality. Today you're going to see Lexus make use of the Oculus Rift DK2 – still a developer kit, mind you – to show potential drivers what it'll be like to drive a Lexus RC F. Virtual reality helmet and physical controls instead of on-track driving. How's that for a compelling use of next-generation technology?

What you're about to see is a demonstration published by Lexus. Watch as the driver drives slightly less-than-safe. They're not terrible, by any means, but Lexus is certainly right to be putting drivers behind the virtual wheel rather than the real wheel in cases like these.

This is part of a Beta launched at the 2014 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance in Monterey, CA. This VR experience may be released to the public eventually – for now it remains behind closed doors – unless you're at one of the following shows:

Auto Shows:

Orange County – Oct. 2 – Oct. 5

Las Vegas (SEMA) – Nov. 4 – 7

LA – Nov. 21 – 30

Detroit – Jan. 17 – 25

RC Ride & Drives:

Chicago – Oct. 11

Englishtown, NJ – Oct. 18

Atlanta – Nov. 1

Ontario, CA – Jan. TBD

This experience makes use of a full-bodied auto console – the seat, pedals, and wheel, that is. It also has 3rd-party headphones since this version of the Oculus Rift does not come with them, and drivers are given brief instructions before taking off. Easy peasy.

Below you'll see the RC F roll out a perfect donut. Just so you know what it's all about from the outside.
