Oculus Rift and Touch bundle gets a big discount in summer sale

It's proving to be a pretty excellent summer for VR. Not only did we see a rather tempting discount on the HTC VIVE for the Steam Summer Sale, but it wasn't long before Best Buy was offering a deal of its own on the Oculus Rift. Now Oculus is getting in on the action directly, delivering the best deal we've seen thus far as part of its "Summer of Rift" promotion.

For a limited time, Oculus has significantly discounted the list price on its Rift + Touch bundle, which packs the headset and two Touch controllers together. What was once $599 has been discounted to $399, nearly splitting the cost in half. If you've had your eye on an Oculus Rift, now certainly seems to be the time to buy.

Unfortunately, this doesn't mean that standalone Touch controllers have been discounted – a pair of those on their own will still set you back $99. If you've already got a Rift headset, then, there isn't much in this sale for you.

Of course, it's important to keep in mind that you can't simply dive into VR just by picking up this bundle. You'll also need a relatively beefy PC, with Oculus recommending either a NVIDIA GTX 1060 or a Radeon RX 480 or better. Alternatively, if you've got a previous-generation graphics card, Oculus recommends at least a GTX 970 or an R9 290, but it's also recommend that you have a Core i5-4590 or Ryzen 5 1500X along with at least 8GB of RAM.

Assuming you've already got the rig to handle VR, then this is a pretty great deal. It's rare to see more than a $100 discount on these VR headsets, and with this sale in place, the Rift costs nearly half of what the HTC VIVE does. It'll be interesting to see if HTC comes back with a new promotion of its own, but considering the fact that its summer sale just wrapped up, that seems unlikely.
