NVIDIA Tegra 2 gets official: Tablets targeted

NVIDIA have announced their next-gen Tegra platform, the unsurprisingly titled NVIDIA Tegra 2, and as expected the 40nm chip packs Full HD 1080p support and Flash 10.1 acceleration along with compatibility with Windows CE, Windows Mobile and Android.  NVIDIA say they're also working on Google Chrome OS support.  The Tegra 2 uses an ARM Cortex A9 core running at up to 1GHz, which NVIDIA reckon is good for four-times the performance of the first-gen Tegra.

While the company obviously won't be putting out their own hardware commercially, they do say that multiple Tegra 2 based tablets – with screens generally ranging in size from 5 to 10 inches – will be announced at CES 2010 this week.  While they certainly aren't the only chipset company with their sights on that segment, NVIDIA are hoping that their Atom and Snapdragon besting power frugality will give them an edge.

NVIDIA also say that their focus for Tegra 2 is keyboard-less slates; that way, they reckon, users won't pick up a device based on the chipset thinking they're getting a full laptop and then potentially be disappointed.  Meanwhile the company's existing first-gen Tegra 1 chipset will continue to remain available, though targeted at smartphones rather than tablet-style devices.
