nubia Red Magic 5G teasers point to an air-cooled powerhouse

They may not be flying off the shelves but some manufacturers still believe in the appeal of gaming smartphones. These niche devices add over-the-top features on top of already high-end specs. Since it seems that everyone this year will be sporting 90Hz or 120Hz screens, nubia's Red Magic 5G will be pulling out all the stops, at least based on a series of teasers from the company's own president.

The current nubia Red Magic 3, launched last year, already boasts of a 90Hz screen, so far the fastest refresh rate possible on an AMOLED panel. Recent leaks, however, suggest its successor will leapfrog over the competition with a 144Hz screen. That, however, may have just been the tip of the iceberg.

A series of Weibo posts from nubia president Ni Fei has dropped clues about potential upgrades, including 16GB of RAM, the highest amount in a consumer phone. There's also 80W charging, wired of course, that will attempt to outdo OPPO's SuperVOOC 2.0.

Presuming it will run on the Snapdragon 865 to take advantage of that 5G connectivity, it will mean that the nubia Red Magic 5G will be tempting fate as far as thermal efficiency goes. In addition to the fan-based solution it already implements, the phone might have a new air-cooling solution to allow the phone to be used while charging.

Of course, even if they came from the company's top exec, it's not certain they'd all be implemented in nubia's next gaming smartphone. And with all those new features in tow, it could mean that, unlike previous iterations, the nubia Red Magic 5G could break through the price barrier, taking away one thing that made it appealing over, say, the ASUS ROG Phone II.
