Nokia 9 pops up at FCC with discouraging specs

The Galaxy S9 might turn out to be a somewhat of a mellow device next year but another "9" might outdo it in disappointing fans. The Nokia 9 has just landed at the FCC, hinting at its impending launch and, unlike most FCC sightings, has some details to show. Unfortunately, they are details that Nokia fans might not be looking forward to seeing, painting the picture of a smartphone that might not start off the new year well.

Does Nokia and HMD Global have a flagship phone? Technically speaking, that would be the Nokia 8 but only because it is the most premium model in the companies' lineup. For some reason, however, it feels lacking in punch, not to mention marketing push, that most smartphone flagships get from their makers and the community.

That's probably partly because of the Nokia 9 that was leaked early on. But if you were expecting the phone to be it, you might be severely disappointed. Based on FCC documents, it's going to be a confusing mix of hardware,. both better and worse than the Nokia 8.

The Nokia 9 is expected to get a 5.5-inch screen, resolution unknown. It would be shocking if it got a Full HD screen considering the Nokia 8 already has QHD, but, as we'll see, bigger and newer isn't better. For example, the dual cameras are noted to be a 13 and 12 megapixel pair, a slight downgrade from the Nokia 8's equal 13 megapixel twins. Then again, the specs of the cameras will be more important than its megapixel count. The front camera, however, is a total letdown, down to 5 megapixels only. At least the battery is a larger 3,250 mAh.

One of the biggest disappointments, however, will be the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor, the exact same one on the Nokia 8. Granted, market dynamics might mean that OEMs other than Samsung won't get their hands on the Snapdragon 845 until near the middle of 2018. But considering the Nokia 8 just launched two months ago, HMD Global shouldn't be in any rush anyway.
