Nokia 6 gets Android 7.1.1, hints at a promising life

The HMD-made Nokia 6 is starting to get Android 7.1.1. Considering that the smartphone was just launched earlier this year, that doesn't seem to be unusual. But considering the messy Android update situation, that's never really a given. But with HMD Global pushing out the latest, at least as far as non-Google phones are concerned, version of Android to the mid-range phone, it is making good on its promise to be the best there is when it comes to Android updates.

When you think about it, the Nokia 6 isn't exactly phenomenal aside from its heritage. It's a 5.5-inch Android phone with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 430, 3 or 4 GB of RAM, 32 or 64 GB of storage, and a Full HD screen. The rear camera has a 16 megapixel sensor while the front has 8 megapixels.

That mix of specs and Nokia's name has earned the Nokia 6 its fair share of fans, something that manufacturer HMD Global plans to capitalize on. But, to do so, it has to offer something its bigger rivals can't. And one of those might be Android updates.

A company exec recently commented on how other OEMs aren't doing updates properly, which accounts for the dreaded fragmentation that besets the Android market. HMD plans on working closely with Google to be able to push out Android updates as fast as Google does.

To see it so believe, of course, but HMD seems to be off to a good start. The Android 7.1.1 update to the Nokia 6 brings, among other things, the latest April security update. Given how equally recent phones from rival OEMs are still sitting in March or earlier updates, that's definitely something worth boasting about.
