No Man's Sky update: Another multiplayer mistake

Yesterday, No Man's Sky received a massive update that made a lot of sweeping changes to the game. The biggest addition is unquestionably that of true-to-form multiplayer, which players have been waiting for since day one. Unfortunately, it seems that not all No Man's Sky owners will be getting multiplayer right away.

Shortly after the update, titled "Next," went live yesterday, Hello Games posted an announcement to GOG that said the multiplayer component is delayed for the DRM-free version of the game. That means everyone who purchased the game through GOG will need to wait for multiplayer to go live, which will happen at some point later this year. More specific release details weren't shared.

The good news, however, is that the rest of the update is there, so if you're okay with continuing to play No Man's Sky solo, you'll still get access to most of the content in Next right away. Hello Games said that implementing multiplayer has been a "hugely ambitious and technical challenge," for a studio its size, which is why that particular component has been delayed but other parts of the update are launching on time.

GOG, for its part, announced just a little while ago that it will offer full refunds to everyone who has purchased No Man's Sky, regardless of when they purchased it. So, it doesn't matter if you've owned No Man's Sky since day one or you bought it specifically to check out multiplayer – you can get your purchase cost refunded because of this delay. Players who want a refund simply need to send a message to GOG's support team to have the cost of the game refunded to their wallets.

If you decide you want a refund, though, you'll need to act quickly, because the window to request one will only be open until July 29 at 10:00 PM UTC. While it isn't the most ideal situation, at least GOG is good enough to offer to refund purchases for those who are disappointed by the lack of multiplayer. Will you be refunding your copy?
