Nintendo's next mobile game is an action RPG

Though much of Nintendo's focus is on turning the Switch into a lasting success, it still presses on with its mobile strategy. Nintendo's mobile games have been met with varying degrees of success, with titles like Mittomo missing the mark and others like Fire Emblem Heroes raking in a ton of cash. Nintendo, it seems, is still trying to discover what works and what doesn't, which might explain why its newest mobile title feels like a radical departure from anything it's done so far.

The game, called Dragalia Lost, seems to be an isometric action RPG that, most importantly, doesn't feature existing Nintendo characters. Nintendo is making the game in partnership with Cygames, and though we know next to nothing about Dragalia Lost, its Japanese announcement trailer gives us a good idea of what to expect.

Dragalia Lost is landing in the east first, with Nintendo lining up a summer release for Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macau. The game will then come to North America and Europe sometime later this year. We also know that the game will launch on iOS and Android, but for now, that's all the information we have on Dragalia Lost.

Partnering with Cygames is a good idea on Nintendo's part, as the company has released a number of successful mobile titles. As a more traditional game company, Nintendo could indeed make use of Cygames' expertise to tackle the mobile market. Nintendo has even acquired 5% of Cygames' stock as part of this team up, so it seems to have faith that the studio can deliver a good product here.

The game looks interesting enough, but a big question is how it will be monetized. We'll have to wait and see, but it seems likely that Dragalia Lost will use a free-to-play system like the one found in Fire Emblem Heroes. Perhaps we'll learn more during Nintendo's E3 presentation? Time will tell, so stay tuned.
