Nintendo Switch passes a huge sales milestone in the US

NPD is gearing up to release another report on the state of the games industry, but before it does, Nintendo is sharing its victories a little early. Nintendo revealed today that the Switch was the best-selling console in the US for the month of September, marking the third month in a row that it's earned that distinction. Making Nintendo executives even happier is the fact that in five of the past seven months, the Switch has beaten all other contenders in terms of sales.

That's to be expected of a new console of course, and we can probably assume that Xbox One sales in particular are at least a little low as consumers wait on the arrival of the Xbox One X. Still, the rankings speak for themselves, and it would seem that Nintendo has a popular little console on its hands.

Nintendo didn't share specific sales numbers for September, but it did announce that the Switch has now surpassed 2 million sales in the US. That's a huge milestone for the Switch, as Nintendo wants to hit 10 million sales worldwide by the time its fiscal year ends in March. Back in July, we heard that the Switch was closing in on 5 million sales worldwide, so we can probably expect that number to be a fair bit higher by now.

What's impressive about the Switch hitting 2 million sales in the US is that it managed to achieve that milestone before the holiday shopping season kicks off. The Nintendo Switch will probably be a hot-ticket item come the holidays, and if launch shortages serve as any indication, we'll probably see the console sell out across the US.

The Switch also had a number of games on the best-seller list for September. Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle actually ranked highest at number seven, with The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe ranking at numbers 10 and 11, respectively. We'll see what else NPD has to add to this in the coming days, so stay tuned.
