Nintendo Switch: Netflix, Hulu "will come in time"

It seems that the Nintendo Switch if off to a pretty strong start, with the console selling out across the US and fans and critics alike singing the praises of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Even with that praise, though, the Switch is still lacking in some other areas. Specifically, aside from Zelda and a few other launch games, there isn't that much to do with the Switch just yet.

That's because non-gaming apps are nowhere to be seen on the eShop at launch. Many Switch early adopters have been wondering why that is, pointing out that the Switch would be an excellent platform for streaming services like Netflix and Hulu. With that in mind, what's the hold up?

In a new interview with The Washington Post, Nintendo of America boss Reggie Fils-Aime elaborates a bit on the whole situation. He says that Nintendo is currently in talks with those very services, and that apps like Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon will come to the Switch "in time."

Why aren't they available at launch, though? To hear Reggie explain it, Nintendo wanted to focus on what makes the Switch stand out from the competition at launch. While he says that the Switch's unique approach to home and portable gaming and titles like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild are differentiators, he notes that apps like Netflix and Hulu aren't.

He makes a fair point, but having non-gaming apps available on the Switch from day one would have almost certainly made it feel like a more complete platform. For now, though, we'll just have to wait on Nintendo to hammer out those deals. Considering we've got the massive Breath of the Wild to explore in the meantime, though, things could be worse.
