Nintendo is Competing Against Time, Sees Apple as Threat in Near Term

Nintendo's Reggie Fils-Aime sat down with Forbes recently, and discussed quite a few things. Namely, he wanted to make sure that people understood that, while there are plenty of competitors out there, that Nintendo isn't competing with them. In fact, Nintendo is fighting something much bigger. "It's all about time," Fils-Aime said, when asked who Nintendo competes with.

He went on to add that Nintendo isn't competing with the likes of Sony and Microsoft, but that he's competing with newspapers, Zynga, and surfing the net. That's certainly an interesting way to look at it. But, while he may think that competing with time is a better focus than, say, Sony, he does believe one company has the chops to make Nintendo worry: Apple. "Do I think that in the near term they can hurt us more than Microsoft? Absolutely."

Fils-Aime was quick to point out that content will still win the war. He didn't miss an opportunity to show that 14 out of the top 20 selling video games of this generation came from Nintendo, something that the company (rightfully) takes to heart. Whoever Nintendo sees as a main competitor, as long as it means the company is still releasing interesting hardware and software, it doesn't really matter. However, considering Apple's a new player to the video game market, there's probably some sort of vindication in there for Steve Jobs and company to be seen as a main competitor.
