Nintendo 3DS designated best selling game system in US again

The Nintendo 3DS has had a good run in recent months, and this past month is no different. Says the company in a press release sent out on Thursday, the Nintendo 3DS has earned the title of best-selling video game system in the United States for its third month in a row. Such an accomplishment is being attributed to the game Animal Crossing: New Leaf.

Nintendo fails to mention how many 3DS units it has sold, stating only that it has seen an increase in sales of 14-percent, as well as a higher 45-percent increase in software sales year-on-year. Animal Crossing: New Leaf is one of the reasons for this increase, having sold 150,000 digital and physical copies in its second month after launch. This represents in excess of 660,000 sold in total.

Also responsible for higher sales was Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon for the 3DS, a game that now has more than 820,000 in combined digital and physical unit sales. From there, Nintendo also went on to detail some of its Wii U game numbers, among them being more than 830,000 combined lifetime sales (digital and physical) of Super Mario Bros. U.

The company also launched EarthBound for the Wii U on July 18 in the Nintendo eShop, saying only that "it is off to a good start." A couple of other eShop games – New Super Luigi U and Pikmin 3 – are said to have "generated more consumer spend[sic]" during this time period since their launch. Finally, Nintendo has a slew of new game titles planned for release over the course of 2013's remaining months.

Among these new games is The Wonderful 101, which is slated for release for the Wii U on September 15. For 3DS owners, Pokemon X and Pokemon Y will be launched on October 12, with the rest having less definitive launch dates: The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD for Wii U in October, Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze for the Nintendo 3DS is slated for November, Zelda: A Link Between Worlds for the 3DS in November, and Super Mario 3D World for the Wii U in December.
