New Zelda: Breath of the Wild vids finally tease Zelda

The Legend of Zelda is one of the oddest named video games in history. Although Zelda does play a critical role in the game's world, she isn't exactly the hero(ine) of the stories. That privilege belongs to the (almost always) silent Link. Of course, she's part and parcel of every Zelda game, and though we haven't seen her yet, we presume she's also in the upcoming Breath of the Wild. At The Game Awards, Nintendo finally gives us a glimpse of the princess. Somewhat.

OK, we're not exactly sure it's Zelda, considering we only really see her left side and arm. But who else could this presumably female character be? There have been other females in Zelda games, of course, but if you're going to tease someone in very early trailers, you better be teasing someone important. And no one could be more important in a Zelda game than Zelda. The new trailer also showcases some of the vistas, and beasts, of the world that Breath of the Wild will take place in.

A longer, four-minute video shows direct in-game footage. In particular, the first half focuses on how fights play out, especially timed skill moves.

Perhaps the most important detail revealed by the videos comes at the end. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild was slated to be a Wii U exclusive. With the announcement of the portable hybrid Nintendo Switch, there was a bit of uncertainty surrounding the title's availability. Be uncertain no more, as the trailers promise gamers, whether on the practically deprecated Wii U or the shiny new but still coming Nintendo Switch, that Breath of the Wild will be coming to them. When, however, is still an open question.
