New X-Men: Days of Future Past trailer 2 cranks anticipation

The second trailer for X-Men: Days of Future Past has been released, with director Bryan Singer mixing together both the original cast – including Patrick Stewart and Hugh Jackman – with their younger counterparts from First Class. As in the first trailer, it's a dark and ominous world that they collaborate within, with mutants being hunted down by Trask Sentinels.

That means some of the characters will get two actors playing them. Both Stewart and James McAvoy will take on the role of Professor X, while Ian McKellen and Michael Fassbender will each be Magneto.

The first trailer, released last October, showed how Wolverine – played by Jackman – would be sent back in time to help fight alongside the First Class. It's a far closer atmosphere to the original comics, though not short on the sort of action and CGI we've seen in previous outings.

It will also continue to weave the mutant theme through historic events in the real world. In a viral promotion back in November, dubbed "The Bent Bullet", the X-Men story was blended in with JFK conspiracy theories.

X-Men: Days of Future Past will open on May 23rd, 2014.
