New Tomb Raider movie staring Alicia Vikander scheduled for 2018

Tomb Raider was once one of the biggest series in gaming, and that lead to two big Hollywood movies — 2001's Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, and 2003's The Cradle of Life, both staring Angelina Jolie. But the series began to lose its luster in the years that followed, and only recently has made a comeback with a critically-acclaimed reboot and its direct sequel. Now the movie version of Tomb Raider is looking to do the same, with a film reboot now scheduled for release in March 2018.

Not a lot of details about the movie are known just yet, but actress Alicia Vikander has signed on to star as Lara Croft. The award-winner has recently been seen in Ex Machina and The Danish Girl, and has a part in this summer's Jason Bourne.

The two recent games in the series, Tomb Raider (2013) and Rise of the Tomb Raider (2015), put players in the role of a much younger Lara Croft than had been seen before, with the character just getting started on her journey of searching for artifacts and treasure around the world.

It's not known if the new movie will be based on either of those games specifically, but it is said to portray a similarly younger Lara Croft, which explains the new casting.

The as yet untitled Tomb Raider film will be directed by Roar Uthaug, whose previous work includes helming The Wave and Escape.
