New Tetris mobile game makes its way to iOS

Yesterday, we saw a very interesting series events play out around Tetris – of all things – and the way it's officially offered on mobile devices. Electronic Arts announced that it was sunsetting its Tetris apps, Tetris 2011 and Tetris Blitz, on both iOS and Android. According to a brief statement from the publisher, both games will become unplayable on April 21st, 2020.

That's a fairly normal occurrence in the world of mobile gaming, but what made it strange is the fact that EA removed Tetris 2011 and Tetris Blitz from the Google Play Store as it made this announcement. Almost immediately, we saw a new official Tetris app release on Android, this one made by N3TWORK Inc, the company that's currently developing Tetris Royale.

All of this happened on Android as the Tetris situation on iOS stayed mostly unchanged; Tetris 2011 and Tetris Blitz were left available and there was no sign of a new Tetris app from N3TWORK. N3TWORK's Tetris app released today on the iOS App Store, though with Tetris 2011 and Tetris Blitz still available, there's currently a few different official apps on iOS.

In any case, N3TWORK's Tetris app seems to be more or less a by-the-books implementation of Tetris. There are no zany game modes aside from regular Tetris, though you can customize the look of the game with themes and avatars. The game itself is free and supported by ads, but you can pay $5 to remove those ads.

Though we've only got a solo game mode for now, N3TWORK promises that more is coming in the future but didn't really elaborate on what kind of new modes we can expect. It seems the first addition on deck is that of online leaderboards, but beyond that, we're not sure what the content roadmap looks like. For now, you can find Tetris on the iOS App Store [download] and the Google Play Store [download].
