New LG monitors flaunt Nano IPS tech, Thunderbolt 3 connection

It's definitely going to be late for the holidays, but this announcement at least gives you time to prepare for the costs ahead. LG is prepping CES 2018 attendees with what to expect at its Las Vegas booth, including two rather massive new monitors. The 32UK950 and the ultra wide 34WK95U both boast of the latest in color gamut and HDR support, their main selling point, at least as far as LG is concerned, is the company's new Nano IPS technology, designed for even more accurate color reproduction.

Samsung has its QLED, short for Quantum LED, as its marketing buzzword and now LG has its "Nano IPS". While both were developed to improve color accuracy, they do so in almost opposite ways. Samsung QLED uses quantum dots to emit more accurate light, depending on their size. LG Nano IPS, in contrast, uses nanometer-sized particles to absorb excess light produced by the screen's LED. As a result, the LG 32UK950, in particular, is able to display 98% of the DCI-P3 color spectrum used as a standard in the industry.

In addition to this Nano IPS technology, both of the two new monitors support Thunderbolt 3 connectivity. In fact, the 32UK950 is boasted to be the first to support a Thunderbolt 3 daisy chain of dual 4K monitors. The connection transmits both data and power, enough for a 60W laptop, keeping the connections simple and clean.

The LG 34UK95U is extra special. It is LG's first 21:9 UltraWide monitor that supports 5K resolution or 5120x2160 pixels. Like the more regular 32-inch monitor, the ultra-wide display supports the HDR600 standard and, of course, a Thunderbolt 3 connection.

The two new LG Nano IPS monitors will be on display at CES 2018 next month. They will be joined by a QHD Gaming monitor, the 34GK950G, which combines the new Nano IPS technology with NVIDIA's G-SYNC anti-tearing feature.
