New Exynos 5 info reaffirms high-res displays and USB 3.0

There has been some speculation in the past as to whether we'll see a quad-core processor in the Samsung Galaxy S III. Earlier this week we saw a leaked slide outlining the Exynos 5 processors, including dual- and quad-core models. Even if a quad-core processor doesn't land in the Galaxy S III, it looks like the dual-core Exynos 5 won't be a slouch when it comes to performance, with a new document revealing exact details surrounding the chipset.

The chip will be an ARM-based Cortex A15, and include a Mali-T604 GPU, capable of 2.1 GPixels/s. The CPU will come in two speeds, 1.7Ghz and 2.0Ghz, with the 2.0Ghz speed capable of crunching 14,000 DMIPS. For reference, that's 0.2 DMIPS/MHz per core greater than Qualcomm's Snapdragon S4 chipset, and 1.0 DMIPS/MHz per core greater than NVIDIA's quad-core Tegra 3 processor.

A Cortex A15 dual-core CPU looks to be able to beat out a Cortex A9 quad-core CPU. There are some other interesting tidbits to be found in the information, though. Samsung are including USB 3.0 and SATA 3.0 support on the chipset itself. USB 3.0 support on a smartphone or tablet would be a revelation: copying large amounts of data to and from internal storage on current devices is a chore, to say the least. LTE support will also be on board.

Finally, the chipset also supports resolutions up to WQXGA (2560×1600). It's not new information, but it ties in to recent rumors that we could be seeing an 11.6-inch high-resolution tablet from Samsung, as well as Microsoft's recent reveal of common resolutions that will be found on Windows 8 devices.
