New Doom features get recreated in the original games

If you haven't picked up the new Doom game, I highly recommend it. While the multiplayer leaves a lot to be desired, the single-player campaign is well worth it. If you can't afford it, or your machine can't handle it, that's okay. You can soon get some of the new Doom flavor in the original games.

(Minor game spoiler incoming.) If you have played the new Doom game, you may have come across a special lever in one of the levels. Upon pulling it, a new doorway is opened, allowing you access to a secret area. These secret areas are recreations of various iconic Doom levels, rendered to look exactly the same as they did back in the early 90's.

While this was a nice touch, some modders decided to see if they could take the game and do the reverse. Instead of inserting old Doom content into the new game, why not take new Doom content and recreate them in the original games?

the first big mod is focused on getting the new weapons into the original games. Thanks to a collective effort, there are now sprites of the new guns that have been rendered to fit the look of the originals. They even function similarly to their new-game counterparts. Check out the video below to see some of the new weapons in action.

Another modder is also working on getting glory kills to work in the classic titles. Sure, they might not be as gory as the ones you'll see in the new game, but it's still rather effective.

With this much progress already made, one has to wonder how long it will take for a group to recreate the entire new game's campaign as a mod for one of the original Doom games.
