Netflix still "exploring" Nintendo Switch app, but we might be waiting a while

The Nintendo Switch is becoming a great little platform, but it's still far from perfect. Switch owners have complained about a variety of things since launch, including the lack of a virtual console and the need for a smartphone app for in-game communication. One of the most common complaints, however, is that the Switch is missing streaming apps that have already found their way to every other platform imaginable.

This is particularly mind-boggling because it seems like the Switch would be the perfect fit for such apps, owing to its portable nature. As it stands, though, the only streaming app to launch on the Switch to date is Hulu. What about the others like Netflix and Amazon Prime?

As it turns out, Netflix recently gave an update on the state of a potential Switch app. In reply to a Twitter question about when we could expect Netflix to come to the Switch, the company said that there are "currently no plans for Netflix on Nintendo Switch." Taken on its own, that tweet is bad news, but Polygon followed up with Netflix and heard something a little more encouraging.

"We are still exploring the opportunity with Nintendo, but don't have definitive plans to share at this time," Netflix told Polygon. In the time since that exchange, Netflix has deleted its original tweet and put something that closer resembles the statement to Polygon "We are still exploring the opportunity with Nintendo, but don't have definitive plans to share at this time in its place". So, while a Netflix app may not be here for a while, at least the company is trying to sort something out with Nintendo.

The hope, of course, is that Netflix and Nintendo can work out an agreement shortly, because in this age where game consoles like the PS4 and the Xbox One double as media centers, the Switch is woefully lacking in that regard. We'll keep an ear to the ground for more about Netflix on Switch, and we'll update you if anything new is shared. Stay tuned.
